Class 1

Jan Upson

"My own badminton-playing days started when I was in my early 20s and I played competitively in the Medway league for a number of years. If only the Rally Point scoring system had been in place at that time – it would have saved all those hours spent playing in a cold, single-court hall until the early hours of the morning.

My first involvement with Orpington Juniors started when my son joined class 2 many years ago, although in those days I was just the taxi service taking him to and from the class every week! Having joined the OJs senior club, I somehow got talked into taking on the writing and distribution of the OJs Newsletter (which has now been overtaken by this website). In 2004 Ron Crouch, who was then the lead coach for Class 1, approached me about helping out in his class. This was the beginning of my indoctrination into OJs and I was well and truly hooked! I took the Badminton England Level 1 Coaching badge and spent a couple of years watching and learning loads from Ron. Then in early 2008 Ron decided he wanted to spend more time in France and I was approached to take on the role as the Class 1 lead coach. It was at this time that I undertook the UKCC Level 2 coach qualification (gaining the Certificate in early 2008).

As well as being the lead coach for Class 1, I also run the OJs Seniors Club (held every Thursday evening at the Priory Sports Centre). I am also a Badminton England Referee and the Junior Affairs Officer for the Orpington & North West Kent Badminton Association. "
