Class 5

"I first started playing Badminton in 1972 at the age 14 in a local youth club. I played in competitions with other youth clubs in the area and started to play league badminton at the age of 17 in the Camberwell and District League. I stopped playing badminton at 21 for the sake of women, drink and rock & roll. I started playing again at 35 when I was introduced to Meadowside Leisure Centre. When Meadowside closed in 2007 some friends and myself, with the help of Greenwich Council, got together and formed a new club, Parkside Badminton Club. We play at Eltham Green School. After being asked by club members for advice on how to play different shots, I decided in 2008 to do a coaching course. I passed the UKCC Level 1 in May 2008 and Paul contacted me to ask if I would like to help OJ’s, in the new season, assisting with classes 3 & 4. I began to help Mark with class 4 as an assistant coach and was rewarded by the feedback from the juniors when they realised they had reached their short-term goals. Paul advised me to take the Level 2 course in October 2008, which I passed in December 2008. I also help Carl as a volunteer coordinator. Paul has since asked me to lead a class which is due to start in February 2009. I am looking forward to having a leading role within the coaching team and hope to take the juniors, who really want to learn to play, onto the next level."

"I began playing badminton at a young age, eventually joining Orpington Juniors and progressing through all the classes. In 2004 I became too old and began to coach in Class 1. In October 2009 I became a qualified Level 2 UKCC Coach and began leading classes for Primetime. Within OJs, I am also the Website Manager, Assistant Secretary, one of the Tournament Organisers and DJ for the end of season disco. In 2009, I created a video introducing Orpington Juniors and I intend to take this further. Orpington Juniors is a great place to coach as all the coaches and players are very friendly and easy to get on with. Seeing the improvement of the players each year and developing other areas of the club such as the website are highly rewarding."
