Lead Coach - Paul Parham
"I started playing badminton at OJs when I was 8 years old, working my way up through the classes and playing County badminton at 14. Around the same time, I started coaching in Class 2 at OJs in 1994 under the mentorship of Mike Burgess, working towards my Leaders Award badge in 1996. I obtained my Coach (Part 1) badge in 1998 and Coach (Part 2) in 2001 and became heavily involved in leading and assisting classes at OJs, as well as coaching extensively one-to-one. I have completed the upgrade of my Coach (Part 2) badge to UKCC Level 3 and I’m currently awaiting Independent Assessment for this award. After being appointed as the Assistant Club Secretary in 1998, I developed the Skills Award Scheme for OJs that year and later took over as Club Secretary in 2005. The second half of 2008 mostly focussed on developing the coaching team at OJs and writing the Development Plan and budget to enable OJs, in a joint partnership with Park Langley, to become the Bromley Performance Centre, the only Performance Centre in Kent. We were awarded this in October 2008. I am also a Badminton England Tutor/Assessor for the UKCC Level 1, 2 and 3 qualifications, Badminton for Teachers (Secondary) Award and Badminton Junior Helper Award and have been heavily involved in Coach Education in Kent and the surrounding counties. Ambitions for the future include the continued establishment and expansion of OJs and the Bromley Performance Centre, setting up new classes for schools coaching, adult coaching and disability coaching, working with Badminton England on developing assimilation courses from the old coaching badges to UKCC qualifications and the development of a book on Performance Analysis. Outside of badminton, I work as a Research Fellow at Imperial College London working on modelling the potential health impacts of climate change, particularly those related to changing patterns of infectious disease transmission."

"Although I have been playing badminton for many years, I have in the last five years been privileged to have belonged to a local club where we had three hours practice and training before playing 2 hours of games. Sadly the club has now folded, but I feel Orpington Juniors can be a way for me to extend and continue this very enjoyable approach to badminton, and in doing so help the young people who are the future of the game. I have much enjoyed my visits to OJ's and have been made very welcome."

"Although I played some badminton with my parents when growing up, I took it up seriously in 2004 when I joined a social club run by Greenwich Council. I was able to play several times a week and also attended a coaching weekend at Milton Keynes which motivated me to try coaching myself. After helping out in Class 3 for a few months the opportunity arose to take my UKCC Level 1 coaching qualification which I was pleased to pass. I'm now looking to take my level 2 in 2009 as I would like to coach my own class at some point in the future. Outside of OJs I play a lot of badminton, competing for both Greenwich Borough and Hayes badminton clubs in the Orpington/North West Kent League. I am also the match secretary for the league, making sure the fixtures run smoothly throughout the season and the league tables are kept up to date."
